10 Great Sci-Fi Movies Ruined By One Character
2. Batman Begins - Rachel Dawes
Katie Holmes is a good actor.
Her performances in Dawson's Creek and Pieces of April are testament to the fact that she can play interesting characters, although you wouldn't know that if you'd only ever seen her as Bruce Wayne's generic love interest in Batman Begins.
As one of Bruce's oldest friends and a district attorney, Rachel Dawes is perfectly positioned to add to his life as a civilian and a crimefighter. However, she fails miserably at both, being incredibly boring to watch and acting like she barely knows Bruce at all.
Though ,as we already said, this isn't Holmes' fault. She was given absolutely nothing to work with as Dawes, with all the action focused on the male characters in Christopher Nolan's first foray into superhero movies.
Also, she was dating Tom Cruise at the time, so clearly she was dealing with a lot.
When the character was recast for The Dark Knight, Maggie Gyllenhaal was given a much more substantial part to play in the story. In Batman Begins, Dawes is just fodder for Scarecrow and his evil plan, a damsel for Batman to rescue.
Hardly the most inspiring script in the world.
