10 Great Subplots In Bad Recent Movies

5. The First Gay Superhero Romance - The New Mutants

It didn't surprise a single solitary soul when the long-delayed The New Mutants turned out to be a painfully forgettable low-fi superhero origin story, save for its single distinguishing subplot.

The film's only triumph is in being the first major superhero movie to place a significant LGBTQ+ romance front-and-center, between protagonist Dani Moonstar aka Mirage (Blu Hunt) and Rahne Sinclair aka Wolfsbane (Maisie Williams).

While even the Marvel Cinematic Universe is still paying innuendo-heavy lip-service to the LGBTQ+ community without actually including a fleshed-out, upfront gay relationship in any of its movies - for fear of harming those precious international box office receipts - The New Mutants just went and did it.

The love story between Dani and Rahne is by far the strongest dramatic material of the entire movie, aided by Hunt and Williams' convincing performances, ensuring this blooming romance feels convincingly nervy and heartfelt.
