10 Great Teen Horror Movies (No One Ever Talks About)
8. Cherry Falls
Barely even released, 2000's Cherry Falls was an uber-dark attempt to capitalize on the post-Scream slasher boom and provide some cutting commentary on the sub genre.
However, where Scream's satire mainly took aim at the genre's cliches, this Brittany Murphy vehicle took a pointed jab at the gender politics underlying the average slasher movie. With a killer who targeted virgins instead of sparing them, this grim, brutal, but surprisingly funny film forced viewers to wonder why final girls were always pious Sandra Dee style virgins.
With a brilliant, offbeat central performance from Murphy and a cast of unusually mean-spirited suspects, this murder mystery plays its teen drama elements straight whilst adding an undercurrent of dark humour via its witty dialogue and vicious kills.
With a wild closing sequence and insane killer reveal, this criminally under-seen subversive slasher is overdue a revival now that the censorship board of America are finally willing to screen it without countless cuts.
