Before non-gamers were introduced to fungus-based horror through the insidious curling tendrils of The Last of Us' cordyceps infection, one of the prevalent examples existing before-hand was 2016's acclaimed outing The Girl with all the Gifts.

Based on Mike Carey's book of the same name, the film's fungal infection turns humans into mindless but terrifyingly formidable zombies - appropriately dubbed "hungries". Possessing a deeply immersive atmosphere of raw tension, director Colm McCarthy's film expertly brings this riveting dystopian world to life, providing an unforgettable viewing experience that invokes a remarkable amount of introspection for a horror, let alone a zombie film.

Sennia Nannua's Melanie - a zombie-human hybrid - is the most notable survival of the film's core cast, with Glenn Close's Caldwell and Paddy Considine's Parks being brutally dispatched as the action unfolds. However, despite being a zombie film where the zombies technically win, The Girl with all the Gifts remarkably features an entirely human survivor in Gemma Arteton's Helen Justineau.

There is the minor caveat that the film ends with Helen now forever trapped within a sealed mobile laboratory after Earth's air is irreversibly contaminated by the film's deadly fungal spores. With that being said, considering the fact that she's still technically breathing, we'll let that slide despite what is a fairly loose interpretation of what "survival" means.
