10 Greatest "I'm Dead And I Know It" Moments From Stargate

4. Detective John Sheppard - Vegas

Stargate John Sheppard
MGM

Vegas is the second-last episode of Stargate Atlantis, set entirely in an alternate reality, serving as the final catalyst to bring the show to a close. In this reality, Sheppard isn't in the army. He is a detective, hunting a killer who is not from his world, even though he doesn't know that yet.

The killer is a Wraith, one who is aware of the existence of the Prime universe, hell-bent on sending the coordinates of Earth to his comrades. In the Prime universe, they had no knowledge of the location of Earth. They just knew that humans were a pain in the ass.

Detective Sheppard manages to hunt the Wraith down, even though he is hopelessly outmatched in terms of strength. He is shot in the chest, missing his heart by inches, but serving as a fatal blow nonetheless. Though the Wraith is dispatched, the damage is done. As Johnny Cash's Solitary Man plays over the soundtrack, Sheppard lies down in the dirt, looking up at the sky and knowing his time is up. Joe Flanigan nails the scene.
