While its story might have been sadly ripped straight from a number of instances of human history, Avatar earned a bundle at the box office for one reason in particular: visually, it was groundbreaking.

From the off, Avatar's audience felt very much a part of Pandora, owing in part to the movie's revolutionary 3D effects.

When the humans inevitably let their greed for the rare and unimaginatively-named Unobtanium get the better of them and began destroying the planet to reach it, the Na'vi to were forced to fight back. The resulting battle was appropriately spectacular.

With their beautiful planet being destroyed before them, the Na'vi fight not only for their lives, but for their culture and their planet - armed with spears and bows on horseback against the far better-equipped humans.

While it's not entirely sound in principle (how the Na'vi were so incredibly adept at dodging bullets is anyone's guess), there's no denying that the Battle for Pandora was one of the biggest and most stunning battles that sci-fi has ever seen.
