10 Greatest Battles In Sci-Fi Movie History

8. Battle Of Klendathu - Starship Troopers

Starship Troopers is a movie with a bit of an identity crisis.

Based on the book of the same name by Robert A. Heinlein, the story was intended as satire, although its big screen adaptation seemed to flit between poking fun at and glorifying the militarism that it depicted.

After discovering a hostile race of Arachnids while colonizing new planets, humankind decided that waging war would be the smartest tactic.

Preparing to invade the Arachnids' home planet of Klendathu, the humans seem confident. They land and swarm across the dark, desolate landscape, and quickly engage the aliens.

The resulting slaughter was unexpected. Humans torn limb from limb in front of their squadmates send mankind's military on a quick retreat, but not before delivering one of the bloodiest, most terrifying battles in all of sci-fi.

While the movie's visual effects have aged considerably since Starship Troopers 1997 release, the sheer terror on the faces of the soldiers is timeless, and the subtext of the battle - that confidently diving headfirst into conflict is a pretty bad idea - makes the scene all the sweeter.
