Sometimes the best moments in a movie are the ones you don’t even realise are so special to begin with. Subtlety is an immensely powerful aspect of cinema, and can connect two movies seven years apart without audiences even realising it.

The two movies in question are Captain America: The First Avenger and Avengers: Infinity War, and the tie is Alan Silvestri’s score. There are two moments, one in each movie, that are so parallel to each other that they simply had to have the same music playing in the background.

A similar thing happened when both Gamora and Nat died at the base of the cliffs of Vormir, but this was different. Back in 2011, Silvestri composed ‘This is My Choice’, the track that played while Steve talked to Peggy as he knew he would have to plunge the aircraft into the water.

Seven years later, that same track is played as Tony Stark boards Thanos’ warship to rescue Doctor Strange and has a similar conversation with Pepper. He didn’t know if he was ever going to come back, and he almost didn’t. He was in exactly the same position as Steve all those years before, making the impossible call to sacrifice their lives with their loves in the face of doing what was right.
