10 Greatest Debut Films Of All Time

7. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

The goriest film ever made that actually features very little gore, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was banned in the U.K. for decades yet retained a very loyal cult following in that time. The film is one of the most frightening ever made because it gives the viewer a sense that everything is not going to be OK that related to lingering fears regarding Vietnam at the time of its release. Even the closing shot when Sally is rescued offers barely any closure, and certainly no comfort, as Leatherface is shown still hurling his chainsaw around in one of cinema's most famous closing shots. The fact that Leatherface's deranged family is still alive at the film's end leaves the viewer with the feeling that the story is doomed to repeat itself over and over again for no seeming reason just as it had done to Sally and her friends. The documentary style camerawork provides a sense of realism that no other horror movie has ever been able to capture and adds a deeply unsettling layer of terror to the movie.

My favorite movies are Before Sunrise, Pulp Fiction, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alien and Her so don't be surprised to see those pop up in my writing from time to time. I'm currently in school for Journalism/English and I have an obsession with all things cinematic on the side.
