10 Greatest Debut Films Of All Time

6. Badlands

Terrance Malick's achievement with Badlands is one of the greatest in cinema's history. He was able to make an absolutely incredible masterpiece of a movie with no studio backing, no prior experience on a film set and never having directed anything prior. Malick was just a film student with a dream and a vision that gives every film student hope. The most amazing thing about Badlands is that it feels whole and complete in a way that most directors never manage in their absolute prime. The film is a feverish blend of eerie, controversial themess, summer-time cinematography and brilliant musical choices. The two central performance by Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek are also the best they've ever given, making Badlands not only a showcase for the emerging genius of Terrance Malick but the acting depth of its leads as well.

My favorite movies are Before Sunrise, Pulp Fiction, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alien and Her so don't be surprised to see those pop up in my writing from time to time. I'm currently in school for Journalism/English and I have an obsession with all things cinematic on the side.
