Before it launched a confusing, convoluted film franchise, the original Cloverfield reinvigorated the found footage genre and really launched JJ Abrams as the super-producer he's considered now outside of his directing.

Like the best monster horrors, Cloverfield's success is all about what it doesn't show: it does its best to really withhold the monster, showing only reactions to sightings and the aftermath of the attacks in human terms. And the found footage approach really works in that respect.

It's a shame we haven't got to see more of the central monster as the Cloverfield franchise has seemingly moved away from it as a key component, but we'll at least always have the original.
