10 Greatest Ever Creature Movies

7. The Thing (1982)

The Thing is, of course, the 1982 sci-fi horror film starring an exterrestrial creature that imitates other species (both animals and human) to infiltrate and attack an Antarctic research centre, sparking terror and paranoia among its inhabitants as they try to work out who is infected and who could be the next victim.

Although The Thing can shapeshift into other creatures, it still has vulnerability to fire and corrosive substances, which is eventually used by the film's protagonists to repel it. Except it's not really that simple and the vague ending is one of the best open-ended, ominous ones in film history.

Due to the amount of gore in there, the film was originally banned when released in Finland and was ranked as the 12th scariest movie of all time. Stunningly though, the film was received poorly in its initial release in a time of sci-fi popularity such as the release of E.T and Blade Runner. However, in recent decades the film has become a cult classic on home release and is a favourite among horror fans as well as being considered one of the most iconic creature films.
