Essentially a 96 minute advert for the NES, the Wizard follows three children as they journey across America so Jimmy, a withdrawn young boy who is incredibly good at video games, can take part in Video Armageddon, a video game competition held in California. The film now stands as a time capsule to the NES, showcasing many of the accessories available at the time as well as numerous, now iconic, games including Castlevania, Metroid, Ninja Gaiden, Double Dragon and Mega Man 2. Regardless of just how many of Nintendos products were crammed in there, The Wizard still remains famous for previewing the release of Super Mario Brothers 3, a then unseen game by the public around the world. Whilst it might not stand the test of time as a childrens classic, it still firmly has its place in the world of gaming, marking the rise in popularity as Nintendo and Segas consoles started to shape a new generation.
