10 Greatest Ever Musical Movies
1. The Wizard of Oz
It couldn't be anything else at the top, could it? Nothing has been so consistently watched or as fondly remembered as Judy Garland's magical journey through the land of Oz. A ubiquitous children's tale that's been endlessly re-told or reworked for other mediums and audiences, yet nothing quite holds a candle to the 1939 classic.
Everything about The Wizard of Oz simply oozes quality. Whether it's the beautifully vivid world of Oz that burst off screens when first filmed in technicolor, the wonderful character acting and charm of the lion, tin man and scarecrow or Judy Garland's legendary performance as Dorothy, everything was so meticulously cared for. Catchy songs only heighten the simple, joyous impact left on any viewer.
It may only be a simple tale of good triumphing evil, but The Wizard of Oz is such a pure version of this narrative that its simplicity becomes its charm. We want Dorothy to get back home, we want the Wicked Witch gone, we want Oz saved. Seeing it happen is the icing on the cake.
According to the Library of Congress, The Wizard of Oz is the most watched film in the world. If that's true, there's good reason for it; it's bloody marvellous.
