10 Greatest Ever Musical Movies

4. Grease

Grease Drive Through
Paramount Pictures

Grease is the original (and obviously much more accomplished) High School Musical. It's stylish and oozes fun right from the get-go. Grease is the epitome of what it means to adapt a musical for a movie; it heightens the fun.

Grease is all about enjoying your teenage years; louche dance numbers that break out in fights, rebellious teens, drag racing. Moreover, its all about enjoying them in the sixties, so everything is turned up to eleven. Rather than sell us a relatively reasonable story, Grease is completely unconcerned with being anywhere near true to life; after all, we wouldn't have theories of the entire thing being Sandy's dying wishes if it were.

John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John in the final number seem to represent everything we're told people dreamed about being when we were back in school; uber cool, confident and getting the girl/boy. Basically, the brilliance of Grease is that the whole movie feels like wish fulfillment, plain and simple.

To go along with this electrifying movie, we have infectious tracks heard the world over. If it's sheer entertainment value you're looking for, Grease is as slick as its name indicates, and its definitively the one that you want.
