10 Greatest Film Biopics Of The Last Decade

8. I'm Not There

Some of the most-loved biopics are based on the lives of well-loved musicians and Todd Haynes' 2007 I'm Not There is no exception. The Far From Heaven director took on musical icon Bob Dylan's fascinating story and weaved a wonderfully unique narrative in a truly stunning way. Creating six different characters that represent a different aspect of Dylan's life and work; Haynes was able to create a multi-layered narrative that broke the rules of traditional linear storytelling. The flick focuses on Dylan's widely sought after career as well as the personal issues that rise when being the great Bob Dylan; with Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Richard Gere, Heath Ledger, Ben Whishaw and Marcus Carl Franklin all playing separate characters that embody a different side of the famous American singer/song writer. The film only mentions Dylan himself at the very beginning of the narrative but apart from that, it is up to the audience to connect what they're seeing with how they perceive Dylan; focusing on which Dylan they empathise most with. The film is told in such a fabulously art-house style that audience are able to easily immerse themselves into this biopic, all while enjoying the general look of an independent art flick. The stunning performances from the cast are matched with the equally stunning way in which it's filmed, with Haynes dipping into various post-production effects to create an ambiance unlike anything a biopic has brought before.
