8. Hicox Goes Out Speaking The King's - Inglourious Basterds

The whole basement bar scene in this movie is one of Tartantino’s best and most tense sequences. In occupied France, British Commando Lieutenant Archie Hicox meets at the tavern with a fellow undercover agent, German actress Bridget von Hammersmark.

Given that he is not a native German speaker, Hicox’s mannerisms and accent attract attention and arouse suspicion. He seems to have pulled it off, with the Nazi soldiers imminently due to depart, when a simple hand gesture gives him away as a British soldier.

Their hushed negotiations fall apart almost immediately, as they realise nobody can leave the room now that the secret is out. After a short pause Hicox nods, sits back in his chair and grabs a cigarette, “well if this is it, old boy, I hope you don’t mind if I go out speaking the King’s.”

He takes a drag as the realisation sits in, finishes his scotch and then kicks off the shoot-out that will result in the death of all but one person present in the tavern. If you’re gonna die in a shootout, you may as well have a cigarette and a scotch in hand, am I right?
