10 Greatest ‘I’m Dead And I Know It’ Moments In Movie History

7. Marty Gets A Pretty Crap Death - Independence Day

Independence Day Marty

As iconic as the whole of Independence Day is, one of its very best moments comes from someone you really wouldn’t expect it from.

Jeff Goldblum’s resourceful satellite technician David manages to stay pretty level headed as he finds out that an attack of unprecedented power is about to decimate the world.

He instructs his colleague Marty (played by the wonderful Harvey Fierstein) to get out of town, channeling his chaotic nervous energy into something that will actually do him some good. Unfortunately, it’s just a tad too late.

As David and the Presidential posse board air force one to fly to relative safety, the countdown comes to an end and the alien ships release a series of energy beams that turn everything in the surrounding area to dust. People are running, screaming, from their impending fiery death and then there’s Marty: sat in his car staring directly at the incoming wall of flames.

In possibly the most understated final words ever, he just manages to say “oh crap” before he gets blasted into oblivion. His slack jaw and wide eyes say it all, he knows there’s no escaping what is coming. Amongst all the yelling and crying, you’ve got to respect that.
