4. Schultz Would Rather Die Than Shake Hands- Django Unchained

Independence Day Marty
Columbia Pictures

Christoph Waltz’s Dr Shultz lived as a legend and died as one too. He’s a man of morals and it is that which causes him to recognise when his death is the only option left.

As he and his partner Django close the deal on purchasing Djano’s wife (Broomhilda) from Calvin Candie (owner of the plantation and overall !*$%), they are walking to the door when Candie calls them back - insisting that Schultz shakes his hand.

After multiple refusals from Schultz, Candie pulls his trump card: in Chickasaw county, he states, no deal is complete until the two parties shake hands. In this moment, Schultz realises that he can not shake Candie’s hand, and without shaking his hand he, Django and Broomhilda will all be shot. So he creates himself a third option.

He shrugs as if in resignation, walks towards Candie with an extended arm and then BOOM, with a tiny gun he produces from his sleeve he shoots Candie right in the heart. If the options were shake or die and the former is something he could never do, he may as well go out with a bang. Literally.

It’s even a bit of a two in one here, as Candie’s face when he realises he has been shot is a visage for the ages. True legend behaviour here.
