10 Greatest 'I'm Dead And I Know It' Moments In Supernatural Horror Movies
6. Father Malone - The Fog
It's thanks to movies like The Fog that John Carpenter is fondly referred to as the Horror Master.
In Carpenter's 1980 picture - nicely sandwiched between Halloween and Escape from New York - the plot sees the seaside town of Antonio Bay engulfed by a mysterious fog that has brought some vengeance-seeking ghost pirates with it.
Said pirates had their Elizabeth Dane ship deliberately sank by Antonio Bay's six founding fathers back in 1880 so that a leper colony would not be set up nearby; the gold taken from this ship then used to establish the town. And now, the Dane's dead crew - headed up by Blake - are out to take the lives of six locals and take back their gold.
Played by the ever-great Hal Holbrook, Father Malone realises that his grandfather was one of those who destroyed the Elizabeth Dane and its crew. So, when Malone is confronted with the chilling visage of Blake and his undead crew, he realises that he has to offer himself up for sacrifice. Well, that and offer the giant gold cross that had been created using these pirates' treasure.
Despite Malone realising his death was needed here, he's somehow spared as Blake takes the cross and disappears.
Unfortunately for this man of the cloth, the closing shot of The Fog sees Blake return to decapitate Father Malone.
