10 Greatest Indiana Jones Movie Moments

The opening of Raiders of the Lost Ark is one of the most famous scenes in movie history. In the space of only a few minutes, it perfectly encapsulates what makes Indiana Jones so entertaining.

To begin with, it’s the suspense that drives this scene. The combination of Williams’ score and the various booby traps guarding the golden idol hooks in the audience from the moment they enter the temple.

There's also a sprinkling of horror thrown into this scene as well. The frighteningly large spiders and the skeletons of those who had previously entered the temple are more than a little creepy.

After Indy obtains the idol, however, the suspense quickly turns into a thrilling escape involving plenty of close shaves and - of course - the famous boulder scene.

What’s more, the audience learns a great deal about Indy during this sequence. It’s clear he’s wise, experienced, adventurous, and above all, the kind of hero whose plans don’t always go smoothly.

As such, there’s a good reason this opening is so famous. Every element is executed flawlessly, and it’s the perfect introduction to the character of Indiana Jones.
