2. Gollum
The most paranoid person in The Lord of the Rings, Gollum had a huge part to play in The Lord Of The Rings.
Gollum didn't always look so unpleasant, in fact he looked quite like a Hobbit. Gollum was once Smeagol, but after he and a friend ended up finding the One Ring on a fishing trip, things started to go downhill. After killing his friend to get the ring, he went into hiding for five hundred years in the Misty Mountains, living off fish and goblins, until he came across a hobbit called Bilbo.
Bilbo found the Ring and stole it from Gollum, restraining from killing him to escape. Unfortunately, five hundred years of the Ring's influence hadn't done Gollum much good and he soon came looking for it.
Because of the effect of the Ring, Gollum is an unhinged character, swinging between good and bad as the two different personalities battle it out for control. At times he is helpful to Frodo and Sam as he leads them to Mordor, but the power of the Ring eventually takes control of him completely.
However, he may have been able to redeem himself as it's through his actions that the Ring is eventually destroyed.
