10 Greatest Monster Horror Movies Of The 2010s

8. Annihilation

Searching for her missing husband (Oscar Isaac), a biologist (Natalie Portman) embarks on an experimental expedition into a biological disaster zone. She may or may not find her husband, but what she does find is a strange new world, inhabited by bizarre wildlife, weird new plant growth, and terrifying mutant creatures.

Granted, Alex Garland's Annihilation is less of a monster movie than a trippy great sci-fi film with monsters in it (see also: the albino alligator), but good luck remembering that when faced with the film's horrifying mutant bear sequence. With the team (Portman, Tessa Thompson, Jennifer Jason Leigh) trussed up, gagged and helpless, there's nowhere to run, hide or even scream as they are faced with the nightmare bear. Its bear DNA mushed together with that of a human, the mutant bear offers the film its most memorable sequence - the terrors only exacerbated by the bear's very human scream.
