Pennywise the Dancing Clown received a terrifying new makeover in 2017's It, by director Andy Muschietti. Re-adapting Stephen King's epic novel and re-imagining Pennywise for a new audience, Muschietti brought back Pennywise bigger, badder and creepier than ever before. And, as played by Tim Curry in 1990, Pennywise has always been pretty creepy.

Wasting little time, Muschietti introduces his audience to the all-new Pennywise in the film's already-infamous opening sequence. Knowing what fate awaits poor Georgie makes it no less horrifying, especially as the ravenous clown takes his whole arm. The second film (released in 2019) has its share of scares too, but nothing so effective as Pennywise's earlier antics, terrorizing the children of Derry and slaughtering his way through the young population.

As embodied by Bill SkarsgÄrd, this Pennywise is at his scariest when he's just Pennywise... letting the whispered lisp and independently popping eyeballs do all of the heavy lifting.
