4. It Follows

David Robert Mitchell's supernatural horror film follows a young woman (Maika Monroe) who finds herself pursued by a shape-shifting entity after she sleeps with her then-boyfriend for the first time.

The 'it' of It Follows is an unstoppable, unknowable entity - invisible to everyone except for those it pursues - and can only be given pause by being passed on to another (through sexual intercourse).

The subtext is heavy, but so are the terrors of It Follows. 'It' appears in various forms several times throughout the movie, each more terrifying than the last. Perhaps the film's greatest scare comes early on in the film, as Jay (Monroe) locks herself away from the creature. When the door finally opens, 'it' steps out from the shadows - a tall, hulking, expressionless fellow with blacked out eyes and an intimidating gait.

Naturally, Jay scarpers on out of there, and barely looks back. One can hardly blame her.
