10 Greatest Monster Horror Movies Of The 2010s
2. Possum
Matthew Holness may be most well known for his cult comedy TV series Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, but there's nothing funny about his Possum. Written and directed by Holness in 2018, this psychological horror film follows a disgraced puppeteer (Sean Harris, as creepy as ever) and his horrible, abusive, horribly abusive father (Alun Davis).
Philip's childhood trauma manifests itself as the spider-like marionette 'possum', which haunts his home and his dreams with its nightmarishly limbs and all-too human face. Try as he might to dispose of possum - burning it, throwing it in a river - the creature keeps coming back; the embodiment of the trauma he has suffered, and the manifestation of the guilt for the terrible things he does (?) now.
This low budget horror film flew under the radar upon its release in 2018, but remains one of the decade's best. This is a bleak, miserable work of psychological horror, with a great pair of performances at its heart - and a truly terrifying monster in the titular Possum.
