10 Greatest Movie Opening Scenes Of All Time

1. 2001: A Space Odyssey

http://youtu.be/ML1OZCHixR0 Kubrick again... but very much deserved. This film is a film I probably shouldn't have liked. It is arguably more about the style and artistic merit than it is about the story and I usually prefer a film with a good story to a film which simply looks great. That isn't to say the story in 2001 is all that bad (I am almost obsessed with HAL 9000 and believe he is one of the greatest characters in film of all time) but it certainly isn't the greatest story to be translated to screen. If I am being completely honest, and I am sure I am not even remotely alone here, I didn't so much understand the film. I kind of got where it was going until the final scene which completely left me baffled. Again, I am usually the first to complain about a film when the story is so confusing to piece together... but I think I was just so blown away by the beauty of this cinematic masterpiece that I simply didn't care. This opening is my favorite scene from the entire movie, and like most of Kubrick's films, he sure does know how to creep me out- Men in ape costumes are one of the things that really send shivers down my spine. The appearance of the long rectangular extraterrestrial Monolith in this scene caught my attention immediately and I simply love any things that juxtapose each other . The way it is introduced to the apes surrounding with a buzzing sound like a mass of swarming bee's send tingles across the body and again, goes to show what a master Kubrick is at using sound with real impact in his films. The triumphant infamous soundtrack used at the end of this clip in the scene for which this film is probably most famous for... the moment the ape starts to become more human and learns how to use tools after coming into contact with the Monolith... is gobsmackingly brilliant, and the mirror cut from past to future (well, 2001) is the greatest transition from one scene to another in the entire history of cinema. What do you make of these selections? Think I missed anything in particular out (Saving Private Ryan perhaps?) or just want to express how much you love the particular scenes I mentioned... please don't hesitate to leave a comment. I will try my very best to reply back to you...

I am a recent Screenwriting for Film and Television graduate from the UK. I am an unashamed geek who loves everything Marvel, and anything Joss Whedon has ever touched (except for maybe Alien Resurrection and Titan A.E). My current favorite TV shows are Breaking Bad, Family Guy, House of Cards, Game of Thrones, American Horror Story, Homeland and Glee. I look forward to debating things with all of you in the future.
