10 Greatest Musical Moments In Martin Scorsese Movies

7. The Departed: Dropkick Murphys - Shipping Up To Boston

This pounding, shanty-like barroom anthem from Boston’s own celt-punk legends the Dropkick Murphys fits in perfectly with The Departed’s overall aesthetic. It’s a loud, brash and distinctly Irish anthem that you can practically smell the whisky on.

With Scorsese’s Boston crime movie being crammed full of Irish-American rogues on both sides of the law, it became the unofficial theme tune of the movie as a whole. It’s used on more than one occasion, including early on as the premise is initially set up and our two leads forge their respective paths.

Perhaps its most memorable usage though comes when Nicholson’s Frank Costello angrily barks down the phone to his own mole to “Get rid of the f*ckin’ tail” as he and his boys head out to do a crucial bit of business. The car speeds into the night as the Murphys chant along in the background.
