How do you begin the most anticipated movie, not only in the history of the MCU, but in recent cinematic memory altogether? There were so many questions going into Avengers: Endgame, so many threads that needed picking up, and so many places it could have started.

Even with so much to get through in the biggest movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Russo brothers decided to begin with a character that was completely omitted from Infinity War. Many were surprised when Clint Barton didn’t appear at all in the third Avengers movie, but he was front and center to begin the fourth.

While his Avenger buddies were fighting all over the universe, Clint was enjoying a quiet, secluded picnic with his family. However, his wife and children were turned to dust. The audience all knew what happened, but Clint’s blind panic at their disappearance was tough to watch.

This was a subtle reminder of where Infinity War left off, it set up Hawkeye’s Ronin story throughout the movie, and though it wasn’t the explosive opening that it could have been, it engaged audiences immediately.
