10 Greatest Opening Scenes In MCU History

2. Thor: Ragnarok

Taika Waititi and Ragnarok took the Thor franchise, one of the weakest in the MCU at the time, and sent it in a completely new, and infinitely better direction in 2017. The director wasted little time in making this known to audiences.

The first two Thor movies were relatively slow moving, and as close to boring as you can come in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. From the very beginning however, Thor: Ragnarok couldn’t have been any more different.

Chris Hemsworth was able to flex his comedic chops as he rarely had previously in the franchise, while being sent face to face with Surtur, an impressive villain if ultimately underused in the movie. The crowning glory of this opening however wasn’t the surprising comedy or the fiery demon, though these were brilliant in themselves, it was the heart racing action.

To the phenomenal song choice of Immigrant Song by Led Zeppelin, Thor beat his way through Surtur’s army of demons and even a dragon before being called back up to Asgard by Skurge. This scene had everything, and was genuinely better than any part of either Thor or The Dark World before it.
