10 Greatest Religious Horror Movies Of All Time
5. The Exorcism Of Emily Rose
Exorcism films are abundant in religious horror - as stated in a previous entry. Therefore the ones that stand out need to make a compelling reason to feel relevant and vital. The Exorcism of Emily Rose does just that.
The story shows as a lawyer takes on a negligent homicide case about a priest and young girl. The horror of this scenario is that it transpires from the true-life events of Anna Elizabeth Michel. Michel was a girl who died from dehydration and starvation during an exorcism. Her parents and the priest responsible were convicted of manslaughter, and the whole case has a distinct tragedy to it.
Much like its true-life counterpart, The Exorcism of Emily Rose is steeped in dread and sadness. It de-personalises the victim and creates a discussion about the validity of belief/faith over the suffering of someone afflicted with either severe mental distress or actual demonic possession.
That is the authentic relevance of the film; it makes no distinct argument either way. You are not left with the satisfaction of being taught the truth. You have to form your own opinion based on what the characters believe.
The juxtaposition between the horrifying events shown and the proceeding courtroom help to make it clear that this is about faith, not poor Emily.
It is an essential horror viewing.
