6. Metropolis (1927)
Arguably the most important Sci-Fi movie ever made. Metropolis laid so much of the groundwork for what followed it while also wowing its original audiences with the greatest special effects of the time it was released. Many filmmakers have gone back to Metropolis when crafting the huge worlds of their movies but very few can match the blueprint that was set 86 years ago. Metropolis perfectly illustrates the versatility of Sci-Fi by seamlessly blending the German Expressionist style of filmmaking with the grand set design and themes of a dark future ruled by careless and petty individuals.
