5. Children of Men (2006)
Alfonso Cuaron's Children of Men is a film that is both extremely thrilling yet poignant and thought provoking at the same time which is something Sci-Fi has become extremely famous for. The future presented in the movie is one of the most believable when given the situation it represents. What would happen if women were suddenly incapable of giving birth? Cuaron gives us a very bleak but honest answer by showing how hopeless people can become. The world of Children of Men is lost amongst local strife and worldwide war that is hinted at but never seen completely. The narrative of the film is more concerned with telling a simple story set against a much larger backdrop and it succeeds in every possible way. The direction by Cuaron is easily the highlight because he relies on long takes and simple camera angles to draw the audience into the world he is showing them.
