4. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
One of the most romantic films ever made and also one of the most mind bending. Eternal Sunshine is the type of Sci-Fi that lets the story focus on personal relationships amongst people while the effects only serve to heighten the characters and their situations. Charlie Kaufman wrote one of the very best screenplays ever written by completely ignoring the conventional romantic tropes in film and creating his own through developing an elaborate process to illustrate the complexities of love and memory. The energy that drives the narrative slowly draws the audience in until the mind erasing procedure starts and everything begins to fall apart for the protagonist, Joel. The way Michel Gondry directs Joel trying to rescue his memories of his fading love as his mind is, literally, falling apart are fascinating and heart breaking alike.
