6. Pineapple Express

Most stoner movies are pretty low on incident; that is to say, they're largely about just sitting around, getting high, telling jokes that are only funny if you're also stoned, and basically steering clear of trouble.

This is certainly true of process server Dale Denton (Seth Rogen) and his pot dealer Saul Silver (James Franco) in David Gordon Green's Pineapple Express, where after Dale witnesses a murder, the pair have to go on the lam to avoid a similar fate. Arguably the funniest gag cutting through the film is that the duo still find time to get high on the run, and this naturally only heightens their paranoia that a sticky end might be around the corner.

Easily the most brutal film on this list, Pineapple Express also features some gory shootouts that only accentuate the atmosphere of a heightened reality that we're seeing unfold.
