It's hard to explain just how cynical people were of Tim Burton's 1989 film, Batman, just before its release. Since Michael Keaton was known for his comedic roles at the time, having him portray the legendary DC superhero sounded like the most preposterous miscasting possible.

Although a lot of movie fans were expecting a disaster, Batman was an astounding movie from start to finish. After defeating the Joker in an epic showdown, the Caped Crusader asks the people of Gotham to call for him again if they ever require his help.

When a reporter asks how they expect to call him, Commissioner Gordon activates the Bat-Signal, blasting his logo into the air. As you hear Danny Elfman's mesmerising theme while the crowd gazes in awe at the iconic symbol, you can't help but get chills.

Watching the Dark Knight gazing ominously at the his emblem in the night sky is not just one of the best superhero endings, but one of the greatest closing shots in cinematic history. It may have been the end of the movie but it felt like a new beginning for the Batman.
