10 Greatest Swan Songs In Film History

9. Stephen Soderbergh's Side Effects

Rooney-Mara Side Effects is easily the newest film on this list. Steven Soderbergh's final film is technically his Liberace biopic, Beyond the Candelabra, but this list is focused on feature films with theatrical releases. Soderbergh has made an entire career out of working in many different genres and is only rivaled by Danny Boyle in modern genre filmmaking. The film perfectly encapsulates everything that Soderbergh has spent his whole tenure as a director working towards and achieves a sense of mystery and dread that is utterly captivating. Side Effects has all of the trademarks of Soderbergh's visual style and serves brilliantly as a closer to his career because it marries many of his most prevalent themes to a solid narrative with brilliant performances from the leads. Rooney Mara brings a touch of vulnerability to her role that makes the film's many twists more shocking than they have any right to be since you can see them coming a mile away. The direction has a voyeuristic nature similar to Sex, Lies and Videotape while also retaining the clean and precise editing style that Soderbergh has spent almost two decades mastering which makes it a perfect ending to a near perfect career since it basically summarizes everything that he strove to do in just 2 hours.

My favorite movies are Before Sunrise, Pulp Fiction, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alien and Her so don't be surprised to see those pop up in my writing from time to time. I'm currently in school for Journalism/English and I have an obsession with all things cinematic on the side.
