5. Peter's Dark Past - Dawn Of The Dead (1978)

Mid-way through George A. Romero's zombie classic Dawn of the Dead, SWAT team member Peter (Ken Foree) learns that one of the survivor group, Fran (Gaylen Ross), is several months pregnant.

At this point, his response is to ask her partner, Flyboy (David Emge), whether he wants Fran to have an abortion, and not content to end the conversation there, he then adds, "It's not too late. And I know how."

The subject is dropped from that point on, and Fran is still pregnant when we leave her at the end of the movie, but it is nevertheless a fascinating window into the mind of Peter and who he is.

Despite being a member of the police, Peter's insistence that he could perform a backdoor abortion for Fran suggests a less-savory past than the uniform might superficially imply.

Beyond Romero injecting some added social commentary into his film - Roe v. Wade was passed in 1973, only five years before the film's release - it suggests that Peter had some sort of involvement in unsanctioned abortions years before.

With that single line, it's easy to imagine a whole illicit backstory for Peter prior to him becoming a cop.
