10 Guillermo Del Toro Movies That Are Never Going To Happen
6. The Haunted Mansion
What is it? Like most remakes of pretty terrible movies, this promised to go back to the source material rather than follow the same path as the 2003 Eddie Murphy dud. Only, in this case, that "source material" is the eponymous Disneyland attraction. Much like Disney's enormous success with Pirates Of The Caribbean,The Haunted Mansion would take inspiration from the themes and setting of the not exactly narrative heavy ride, with Del Toro promising something "scary and fun" set in a "heightened reality" of ghosts and hauntings. The director first announced his involvement at San Diego Comic-Con in 2010 and then everything went quiet. Last April, though, Del Toro surprised many by referring to the film as an ongoing concern with Ryan Gosling now set to star and Jackie Chan also linked with a role. During the promotion for Crimson Peak, The Haunted Mansion was even talked of as potentially being the director's next project. Why won't it happen? Despite the success of Pirates, there hasn't really been a raft of other theme park-to-movie hits. With even the latest Pirates film suffering development troubles and a pushed back release date, the relative critical and commercial failure of Tomorrowland, and memories of the lack of interest in the previous Haunted Mansion film, this doesn't seem like a project Disney are especially keen to get behind right now. Ultimately, Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark may be a better bet for the director if he wants to make a scary PG-13 picture.
