What Actually Happens
Baz Luhrmann's algebraic interpretation of Shakespeare's romantic tragedy transposes the setting and period, but ends in the same depressing way as the Elizabethan original.
The Capulet heiress concocts a cunning plan to duck out of an arranged marriage by faking her own death, but her star-crossed lover fails to get the message, and kills himself with grief. Having buggered things up a bit, Juliet follows suit, as the two warring families stand around looking sheepish.
What Should Happen
Romeo oversleeps, ensuring he's available if not presentable when Juliet's messenger comes calling. The two meet up before fleeing to Italy, where they have a perfectly happy life with none of the disappointments of real relationships.
After a few days, the penny drops for the Montagues and Capulets, and all they decide it's about time they called Jeremy Kyle to resolve their differences.
