Larry Clark's 1995 indie film is a far cry from the twee coming-of-age picture its title suggests. It was hugely controversial at the time of its release, with some critics labelling it exploitative and others dismissing it as borderline child pornography.
Not everyone felt that way. Prominent reviewers including the late Roger Ebert championed the movie, believing it had a poignant message to deliver about the state of modern society, but even those who insist Kids is a subversive masterpiece and an important cautionary tale shied away from a second viewing.
