10 Harry Potter Characters Who Are Way Better In The Books

4. Kreacher

Kreacher is a house-elf who works for the Black family. Having lived with dark witches and wizards for most of his life, he loathes the Order of the Phoenix and often quarrels with Sirius.

This creepy character doesn’t have many redeeming qualities in the movies. Though he does help Harry by capturing Mundungus Fletcher in The Deathly Hallows, he’s not particularly memorable.

Thankfully, Kreacher has a lot more depth in the books. In a terrific chapter entitled ‘Kreacher’s Tale’, the house-elf recounts the story of Regulus Black (Sirius’s younger brother), who joined the Death Eaters before betraying the Dark Lord and stealing one of his Horcruxes. It’s a fascinating story, and Kreacher can barely keep himself together as he remembers Regulus’s final moments.

After retelling this story, Harry and the others treat him with more respect, and Kreacher becomes a much pleasanter character. He even takes part in the Battle of Hogwarts and leads the other house-elves against the Death Eaters.

If you’ve only seen the movies, Dobby is probably the only house-elf you care about. But for those who’ve read the books, Kreacher’s character arc is a great addition to the series.
