10 Harry Potter Characters Who Are Way Better In The Books

3. Barty Crouch Junior

Barty Crouch Junior is an integral villain in The Goblet of Fire. After transforming into Mad-Eye Moody, he manipulates the Triwizard Tournament and transports Harry to Voldemort by turning the Triwizard Cup into a portkey.

Harry, Dumbledore, and the others don’t discover the truth until the very end of the story. In the movie, he transforms into his true self and gloats about the Dark Lord’s return. But when it comes to Crouch’s backstory, all we get is a brief look at his arrest via the Pensieve.

In Rowling’s original tale, there are pages and pages of fascinating material. Under the influence of Veritasium (truth potion), Crouch tells Dumbledore about his escape from Azkaban, the kidnapping of Bertha Jorkins, the Quidditch World Cup, and the death of his father. It’s one of the best chapters in the book, but in the movie, Crouch’s confession is depressingly short.

Given The Goblet of Fire is already two-and-a-half hours long, you can understand why Crouch’s backstory was cut. But as a result, his character lacks the depth that made his literary counterpart so compelling.
