Professor Lockhart was a fraud. For no other reason than the desire for fame and money, he published a number of books that were false accounts of his magical abilities.

In reality, the only spell he was any good at was the Memory Charm. Armed with such a spell, Lockhart had tracked down many heroic witches and wizards, questioned them about their honourable and challenging deeds, before then wiping their memories and claiming all the glory for himself.

In this sense, Lockhart was clearly someone who sought power and influence rather than wisdom. The desire to maintain his reputation even led him to threaten Harry and Ron with a Memory Charm whilst down in the Chamber of Secrets.

Though the method he used to become famous was a smart idea, Lockhart’s actions and ambitions were clearly that of a Slytherin.
