10 Harry Potter Fan Theories Confirmed By JK Rowling

6. Wands Are Alive

The wand always choose the wizard and it's not always clear why. This quote, from Olivander, is one of the earliest teases in the books of the eventual struggle over the Elder Wand, but the theory that wands are actually sentient and intelligent, rather than simply tools with a bit of extra know-how - this was something to really consider before the final book was released.

Rowling joined Pottercast to discuss some of the theories around the books and movies, addressing this theory directly. She told the hosts that yes, wands knew more than wizards gave them credit for. They had different qualities to look for in a new master though, with the Elder Wand seeking true strength, be it good or bad. Other wands might gravitate toward those who are better at Charms or better at Transfiguration.

What this confirms is that there are wizards out there who, even if they came into possession of the Elder Wand, wouldn't really get much of a benefit from it. What's the point in driving a Porche if you can barely handle a Fiesta? What's the point of having weapons of mass destruction when you're just trying to turn on the kettle from the next room? It's another hierarchy in the Wizarding world, separate from wealth or status. A little depressingly, it suggests that there are some wizards who simply can't cut it.
