10 Heart-Breaking Film Moments When The Hero Became The Villain

9. Harvey Dent - The Dark Knight

No prizes for guessing how Harvey Dent ends up in Christopher Nolan's superhero opus: even if you didn't already know that Dent ends up as chaos-junkie Two Face by the closing credits, the header image on this page probably gave it away. Yes, those with enough prior comics knowledge already knew Dent was doomed from the start (hell, even those who'd seen Batman Forever knew), but that didn't mean Nolan couldn't still make us grieve for his fall from white knight to deformed vigilante. That's due in no small part to Aaron Eckhart's clean-cut but extremely sincere performance, which allows both the audience and Bruce Wayne to almost believe that he could indeed take charge of Gotham from Batman and "be the hero this city deserves" before the rug is swept out from under them by the Joker's cruel manipulation and they're faced with the ugly truth that absolutely no-one is incorruptible.
