10 Hidden Details In Movie Closing Scenes

7. Matilda - Moving To Guam Won't Solve The Wormwoods' Problems

REY SECRET ORIGIN
TriStar Pictures

As we reach the end of Matilda Wormwood's story in the 1996 movie adaptation of Roald Dahl's well known novel, we find the gifted youngster enjoying a spot of tea with Miss Honey outside of her recently reclaimed childhood home.

However, all that peace is very quickly blown to smithereens with the arrival of Matilda's chaotic family. Matilda's mother Zinnia Wormwood quickly grabs hold of her daughter and declares that the Wormwoods are moving to Guam in an attempt to flee the FBI, who were set to prosecute Matilda's father Harry because of his illegal dealings.

Matilda eventually convinces her parents to allow Miss Honey to adopt her in the middle of all the madness, yet this heartwarming conclusion overshadows one hilarious detail Zinnia revealed a few moments earlier.

The Wormwoods were clearly fleeing the U.S. in an attempt to get away from the FBI, however Guam is also classed as a U.S. territory so the FBI would still have jurisdiction there.

This throw away moment brilliantly hammers home yet again exactly how foolish the Wormwood family really is outside of the young Matilda and we only wish we could have seen Harry get his commupence on the big screen.
