2. Avatar - The Real Jake Sully Finally Wakes Up
James Cameron’s Avatar may have held the title of the highest-grossing film of all time for over a decade, but it still feels like it usually gets forgotten about when discussing top films of the 21st century.
The film follows disabled marine Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), who is dispatched on the moon Pandora with a group of marines to try and harvest new energy. Soon, Jake gets torn between finishing his mission and protecting Pandora and it’s population - the Na’vi people.
Avatar opens with a panning shot of the woods in Pandora which finally ends with Jake opening his eyes. It is here where we discover that Jake is actually in a wheelchair. He explains through voice-over that he has been dreaming of flying ever since he was seriously wounded.
Through his experiences on Pandora, he has been given the ability to walk and even fly (through piloting a human/Na’vi hybrid avatar). But more than that, he has been given a bigger purpose. The film then closes on a similar shot to the opening. But this time, when Jake opens his eyes, he has been given a new body and a new reason to live.
