10 Hidden Details In Opening Horror Movie Scenes

2. The Funeral Home - Slither

Slither is a 2006 film directed by Guardians of the Galaxy maestro James Gunn. Unfortunately, he didn't have any name value just yet, so nobody watched it.

The film is about an alien parasite that comes to Earth on a meteorite and infects the residents of a South Carolina town. This sounds awfully similar to the plot of 1982's The Thing, which is about an alien parasite that terrorises residents of an Antarctic research base.

Insert joke about South Carolina being a barren wasteland here.

Whilst Slither didn't fully rip The Thing off, it certainly bears a number of similarities to it. The filmmakers themselves knew this and included a little nod to the classic in their movie.

One of the characters in Slither is called Jack MacReady, which the same last name as Kurt Russell's character in The Thing. Furthermore, we see a funeral home in the opening shot called "R. J. MacReady", which is the full name of Russell's character.

Slither gave credit where it was due and helped shout out one of horror's most beloved movies. But it still didn't live up to the foreshadowing in the original...
