10 Hidden Details That Make Horror Movies Even Scarier

9. The Descent - The Hidden Cave Monsters

The Descent is sh*t scary. It's almost impossible to think of ways that this movie about killer mutants picking off cave cave explorers in the dark could be more effective, and that's partly because of just how well director Neill Marshall builds to the first appearance of the flick's villains.

The first act of the creature feature takes its time to acclimatise the audience to its heroes and this cavernous setting. For the first stretch, the most pressingly frightening thing is the location itself, as our heroes have been fooled into exploring an uncharted cave that is absolutely not safe for them.

What makes this sequence even more tense, though, is that the monsters are always there, biding their time, sometimes even hidden in plain sight in the scenes themselves.

One particularly memorable moment fans spotted comes from a POV shot of one of the explorers shining a light around the cave's ceiling. As they illuminate one particular area you can see one of the creatures hugging the wall, however when the light returns it's no longer there.

It's not quite as terrifying as the night-vision jump-scare, but still pretty damn good.
